25 Random Things I Did During My Big Fat Lesbian Depression

Production Notes

LOGLINE
After getting the shaft in an unbelievable break up, a lesbian reveals her enlightened, yet hysterical road to recovery.

SYNOPSIS
Inspired by the ubiquitous FACEBOOK lists, 25 RANDOM THINGS I DID DURING MY BIG FAT LESBIAN DEPRESSION takes a comedic look at one lesbian’s journey of recovery from an unreal break up. From eating excessive amounts of frozen yogurt, to leaning on friends, to yoga in the desert to entering a twelve step program, 25 RANDOM THINGS uses the framework of social media to poke fun at some of the crazy, yet personal things we do in life to get through our darkest moments in order to move on from the past and emerge into a lighter state of being. Russo stars as herself, along with hilarious cameos by queer filmmakers such as Steak House, Abigail Severance, Glenn Gaylord and Rebecca Sekulich, to name a few, and also features an inspired musical ditty with queer rocker, Abby Posner of FearMia.

DIRECTORS STATEMENT / PRODUCTION NOTES
In the spirit of “catching life as it happens and uploading it quickly to share it on Facebook,” I shot 25 RANDOM THINGS on the point-and-shoot Kodak Zi6 Pocket HD Video Camera, a low-tech capture medium that enabled me to create a personal portrait without the help of a crew. Creating this short was very much a discovery process for me – from learning how to write a personal style of comedy, to directing myself as an actor and working on performance, to learning how to create a short story (with three acts and a character arc) out of a basic “list” of random things. I’ve been making short films – actual films – for the last 15 years, and using this little pocket camera was a liberating experience that suited the creative process this project specifically called for. As for the message of the video, I like to say that there is no rhyme or reason or specific formula for how one heals their own heartbreak, everyone has their own path. The one thing we do share in common is the fact that we have all been there, and with time and perspective, isn’t it a good thing to laugh about it?
